The English test checks speaking, reading, and writing; the officer judges your speaking during the interview from how you understand and answer questions about your Form N-400. In the reading test, the officer shows you up to three sentences, and you pass as soon as you read one of them aloud correctly. In the writing test, the officer reads up to three sentences aloud, and you pass as soon as you write one of them so the officer can understand it (small spelling or grammar mistakes are OK, but abbreviations are not). These rules did not change with the 2025 civics test; the sentences here are practice sentences built only from the official USCIS reading and writing vocabulary lists, not the actual test forms.
