About the exam

Denmark has two knowledge tests, and this app lets you practise for both:

  • Indfødsretsprøven (the citizenship test) is required for Danish citizenship. It tests Danish society, culture, history and Danish values. The official name of the current test is "Indfødsretsprøven af 2021".
  • Medborgerskabsprøven (the civics test) is used for permanent residence. Passing it meets one of the four supplementary conditions for a permanent residence permit. It covers Danish democracy, everyday life, culture and history.

Both tests are run by the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) and held at language centres (sprogcentre). Both are written in Danish, and both are based on free official learning materials published on danskogproever.dk.

Eligibility

(As of October 2026; conditions for citizenship from the Ministry of Immigration and Integration, uim.dk)

Anyone who has applied or will apply for Danish citizenship can take Indfødsretsprøven. To be granted citizenship you must, as a rule, also:

  • Have 9 years of continuous residence in Denmark (8 years for refugees and stateless persons; 6–8 years for spouses of Danish citizens, depending on how long you have been married; 2 years for Nordic citizens)
  • Hold a permanent residence permit and live in Denmark; the permit must have been held for 2 years (1 year for refugees and stateless persons) by the end of the month the naturalisation bill is expected to be passed
  • Pass Prøve i Dansk 3 (B2) or an equivalent exam. Prøve i Dansk 2 is enough if you have received no social assistance in the last 2 years and no more than 3 months of it in the last 9 years
  • Pass Indfødsretsprøven af 2021 (a pass in the earlier 2015 test, taken June 2016–June 2021, also counts)
  • Be self-supporting: no social assistance in the last 2 years, and no more than 4 months in total in the last 5 years
  • Have worked full-time (at least 120 hours a month) for at least 3 years and 6 months within the last 4 years, and be in work when the bill is presented
  • Have no overdue debt to the public sector
  • Have no conviction that excludes you or whose waiting period (karens) has not yet run out
  • Sign a declaration of allegiance and loyalty to Denmark
  • Take part in a municipal constitutional ceremony (grundlovsceremoni)

Exempt from Indfødsretsprøven: residents of Greenland or the Faroe Islands, Swedish or Norwegian speakers with a school-leaving exam from a Swedish- or Norwegian-language school, and certain children and other special groups. Only the Folketing's Naturalisation Committee can grant other exemptions, for example for a documented long-term disability.

Medborgerskabsprøven is taken by people applying for permanent residence. A permanent residence permit normally requires 8 years of residence plus the basic conditions (including Prøve i Dansk 2) and 2 of the 4 supplementary conditions. If you meet all 4, you can apply after 4 years. Passing Medborgerskabsprøven, or showing at least 1 year of active citizenship (for example on a board or in an association), meets one supplementary condition. A pass in Indfødsretsprøven does not count for this.

Format

Indfødsretsprøven (citizenship)

  • 45 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes, each with two or three options
  • 35 questions are based on the learning material Læremateriale til Indfødsretsprøven
  • 5 questions are on current affairs from the 6 months before the test
  • 5 questions are on Danish values (for example freedom of expression, equality, or religion and the law)
  • Pass: at least 36 correct answers, including at least 4 of the 5 values questions
  • Paper test, in Danish only, no aids allowed

Medborgerskabsprøven (permanent residence)

  • 25 multiple-choice questions in 30 minutes, each with two or three options
  • All questions are based on the learning material Læremateriale til Medborgerskabsprøven
  • Pass: at least 20 correct answers
  • Paper test, in Danish only, no aids allowed

Both tests are held twice a year (May/June and November/December). The next sitting of both tests is on 25 November 2026. Dates for 2027 had not yet been published when this guide was checked. SIRI said they would appear on danskogproever.dk by 1 October 2026.

Practice tests in this app use the real numbers for each test (45 questions/45 minutes/36 to pass, or 25/30/20). The citizenship practice test does not include current-affairs questions, because they change every sitting. Follow Danish news for the last 6 months to prepare for those.

Test fee and naturalisation fee

(As of 2026; subject to change)

  • Test fee: DKK 946 for Indfødsretsprøven or Medborgerskabsprøven (2026 rate), paid to the language centre when you register
  • Citizenship application fee: DKK 6,270 for a first application. It is DKK 4,180 for some applicants under 25 who were born in Denmark or arrived before age 8. Your first re-application is free, and later re-applications cost DKK 3,135. The fee is not refunded if you are refused.
  • Permanent residence application fee: DKK 7,570 (work or study) or DKK 4,970 (family reunification or asylum)
  • These fees are separate. Paying the test fee does not cover any application fee.

How to register

  1. Choose a language centre (sprogcenter) that holds the test. The list of test providers is on danskogproever.dk.
  2. Register directly with that language centre in person, by phone, by e-mail or (at many centres) online. Pay the fee when you register.
  3. Register at least 5 weeks before the test. For 25 November 2026 the deadline is 21 October 2026. If you miss it, you can ask SIRI for permission to look for a free place.
  4. If you need special aids (for example because of dyslexia or a disability), apply to the language centre at least 4 weeks before the test.
  5. On the day, bring original ID: a Danish residence card, an alien's or refugee travel document, an EU/EEA/Swiss passport or ID card, or a passport with a residence sticker. A driving licence is not accepted.

Retake policy

  • If you fail, you can take the test again at the next sitting (about six months later) by paying the fee again
  • There is no sick-day re-sit. If you are ill on the test day, you must wait for the next sitting and pay again.
  • No official limit on the number of attempts is published

After passing

  1. Results can take up to 4 weeks. The language centre then gives you a test certificate (prøvebevis).
  2. For citizenship you must send the certificate to the Naturalisation Office (Indfødsretskontoret) at the Ministry of Immigration and Integration yourself. All conditions must be met when you apply. The ministry does not hold applications open while you finish a test.
  3. Apply online with MitID and sign the declaration of allegiance and loyalty as part of the application.
  4. Citizenship is granted by law: approved applicants are added to a naturalisation bill, normally presented in April and October. The ministry gives an average processing time of 24 months.
  5. After the law takes effect, most new citizens must attend a constitutional ceremony in their municipality. There you sign a promise to respect the Constitution and Danish values, shake hands with the mayor or a councillor, and receive your certificate of citizenship (statsborgerretsbevis).
  6. For permanent residence, include your Medborgerskabsprøven certificate in your application to SIRI.

Things to watch out for

  • The learning materials are updated every year at the end of August. The August 2026 editions apply to the November 2026 and summer 2027 tests. Make sure you study the current edition.
  • The values rule is strict for the citizenship test. Even with 36 or more correct answers, you fail if you get more than one of the 5 values questions wrong.
  • SIRI warns that websites claiming to have the real test questions are not official. This app is unofficial too: its questions are written from the official learning materials, not copied from the test.
  • Indfødsretsprøven and Medborgerskabsprøven are different tests, and one cannot replace the other.
  • Denmark has allowed dual citizenship since 1 September 2015, but your other country may not allow it. Check with that country.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take the test in English? No. Both tests are only in Danish. You can use this app's interface and translations in your own language while you study.

Which test do I need? Indfødsretsprøven if you are applying for citizenship. Medborgerskabsprøven if you are applying for permanent residence and want to meet the supplementary condition on citizenship (medborgerskab).

How do I prepare for the current-affairs questions? They cover events from the last six months that were widely reported in the Danish news (politics, society and culture). Read or listen to Danish news in the months before your test. Past papers on danskogproever.dk show the style.

What if I fail? You can register for the next sitting and pay the fee again. There is no sick-day re-sit.
